After You Read This...Burn It!
Have you ever been to a bookstore and read the back cover of a book, maybe flipped through a few pages and thought “hmmmm…this seems interesting”. But then you put it down, pay for your other books (there’s ALWAYS other books) and head home. Then halfway down the street you realize the book you didn’t buy is still calling your name. Should I? Shouldn’t I? So you go back, pick up the book and buy it realizing you’re also stocking up on those Plum Rewards.
This is in fact the true story of my visit to Indigo yesterday. The book in question that I went back for is a little paperback called Burn After Writing by Sharon Jones. I admit the title and the cute cover made me pick it up and check it out, but it was those nagging questions inside, that made me go back and snag it. In essence, Burn After Writing is a guided journal addressing a big question; how honest are you with yourself? This is achieved through a series prompts, questions and personal reflection. Why didn’t I buy it the first time? I wasn’t sure I could answer the questions truthfully…to be honest!
Burn After Writing is a creative tool that takes your attention away from your social media where it’s become common nowadays to ‘rose colour’ your life. Here you’re asked to pick up a pen and play a game of Truth or Dare with yourself.…#nofilterrequired. The book covers your past, present and future while posing questions like, what was the most dramatic fork in the road of my life? I will never forgive (fill in the blank). And what’s the one thing I regret in the whole world? You’re also given choice questions like choosing between This or That (skinny jeans OR mom jeans - kidding), making an ‘All Time Favourite List”, and two whole pages of Firsts and Lasts. Do you remember your first kiss or the last time you ‘faked it’? I also like the Never Have I Ever List, although the book calls it Walk On The Wild Side. Since when did getting a tattoo become a wild thing? I can be honest with you and tell you I have three tattoos, and I love every one!
This or That from Burn After Writing
In true journal style, Burn After Writing comes in various cover options to “match whatever mood you’re in” which I think is a very sweet touch. I happened to pick up the edition with hearts on the cover, it was found on the Valentine’s Day display. Which brings up another question. Do you think you would give honest answers if you were sharing the book with a partner afterwards? Deep thoughts indeed!

So if you’re up for some self reflection and possibly a little fun too, then I highly recommend Burn After Writing. Sadly it doesn’t come with a lock or a book of matches, so you’ll you need a friend with a fire pit!
