No Bags But Your Luggage

If you’re planning on taking an overnight flight this summer, then it’s best to prepare yourself so you don’t become the reason the flight is called the ‘red eye’. I’ve been doing a little research about best practices for overnight flights for an upcoming trip I’m taking later this summer. Today let’s start with your eyes and how to help prevent them from looking puffy, baggy and dark circled upon arrival.

Let’s face it…even a relatively quick ‘overnight’ flight to London or Paris, or even Vancouver to Toronto can leave your eyes (and your skin in general) worse for wear. Four or five hours sleeps doesn’t actually cut it for that Victoria Beckham easing through Heathrow look we desire. But by taking a couple of quick steps before you leave for the airport and in flight, we can do our best to keep the dark circles at bay.

First and foremost, and I know this might be hard for some of you (it will be for me) don’t wear any makeup on your overnight flight. Wash your face (using my seven step routine) at home before heading to the airport. When you get settled on the plane apply another coat of moisturizer on your face and a nice thick coat of eye cream. Hopefully you’ll nod off for several hours of sleep. Then when you wake (before landing) wash your face again and apply a set of eye masks to your eyes. These awesome little masks sit right under your lower lash line and work to hydrate and invigorate your tired peepers. Eye masks don’t slide around, they adhere nicely to your skin for about twenty minutes. When you’re done, remove and apply another layer of day eye cream, spf (because you’re heading out into the day) and your regular moisturizer. You can then apply a fresh face of makeup either in flight or upon arrival to your hotel. Pack a few sets of eye masks to use the first couple of mornings of your trip to reduce puffiness. Here are some masks I’ve tried and like.
