From Mom to Boyfriend - The Denim Edition
Can you believe I’ve been writing this blog for almost four years (how long have you been reading it?) and I’ve never done on a post specifically on jeans? I wear jeans six out of seven days of the week and I haven’t devoted an entire post to them! I can’t even believe it myself.
Denim is the first thing I pull out of my closet when I’m getting dressed. Since it’s become socially acceptable to wear jeans almost anywhere - I do. And if you ask most women what their ‘go-to’ outfit for a night out would be…the answer would likely be ‘jeans and cute top.’ Ohhh…that feels like a whole new blog to me - or at least a weekly feature. Thoughts?
Denim has graced this bod since one of my big brother’s worked for Thrifty’s (now Bluenotes) in the east end Toronto mall Gerard Square, back when I was still hanging out on Greenwood Avenue. It was probably Christmas of 1978 when I ecstatically slipped on a brand new pair of stiff (no lycra in denim back then) dark indigo Lee overalls. I paired them with a pale blue turtleneck and posed for pic pointing proudly to the Lee tag on the front pocket. I stood just a little taller than usual that day. The summer following that happy Christmas, my cousin bought me my second pair of jeans, These were complete wth plaid cuffs as an homage to the 70’s Scottish boy band Bay City Rollers. You bet I was wearing those babies on S A T U R D A Y night while dreaming of Les McKeown! Thus my love of denim was born.
Today I like to have a mix of different types of denim in my closet. Ripped jeans (casual fave), white denim (summer fave), dark denim (dressy), cropped ankles, and I’ve even added a wide leg to the mix. If you look through the brands you’ll find everything from Mother Denim which will run you around $300 a pair to Joe Fresh, $29 a pair. I also wear anything in between including Zara and Pilcro, Anthropologie’s house brand and one of my faves. I’ve also been know to pick up a pair of two of Current Elliot’s at Ex Toggery.
Like dresses right now, denim is having a moment - and styles range from skinny to wide, acid wash to indigo - even coloured denim (think red) is in the mix this season. Jeans should be an effortless and essential part of your wardrobe. Don’t be afraid to play around with different styles and cuts. When buying jeans, make sure you take your time and try on several (like 12) pairs to make sure you find the right fit for you. I’m still a fan of jeans that sit on the hips, thus the high waisted trend isn’t really working for me personally. Good thing because the crop top thing doesn’t really work for the over 40 ladies either unless you have serious ab action going on. Then by all means go nuts.
