The Long and Short of Shorts
Shorts are short...like super short these days. Like 'half ass hanging out the back' short. But I, as a 48 year old woman am NOT interested in half of my ass hanging out the back of my shorts. I'm a little modest and like my ass fully covered - thank you very much. I'm not opposed to showing my legs, after all I work very hard at Pilates for these legs - so I personally prefer a 3' inseam. I know these may seem very short to some of you, but it still covers my booty and is longer that the zero inch inseam short I see at many stores. So here I've put together several very strait forward suggestions for you to find the right chino shorts for this you this summer. And as an added bonus, many of these styles are on sale right now.
J Crew
My favourite chino shorts are from J Crew. They come in a wide range of colours and inseam lengths including 4", 5", 7" and 10" (aka Bermuda shorts). These shorts have a little stretch and a classic straight cut. They are flattering in any length. $52-$59.
Banana Republic
These shorts from Banana Republic have a 5" inseam and are just a little dressier than a chino. BUT having said that it still does not give you permission to wear your shorts with any kind of heels. Choose a nice flat sandal to wear with your shorts. Shorts are meant to be casual and as such should never be paired with heels. I really don't care about the one photo you saw of Jennifer Anniston with shorts and wedges. I still think it's tacky - but that's just my opinion. $50.
The Gap offers three inseam lengths in their classic chino shorts, 3", 5" with a rolled hem and a 10" Bermuda. These short are 97% cotton so do expect that they may shrink a little in the wash. With 3% elastane you can still expect a little stretch. $24-28.
Old Navy
At only $20 (on sale) this Old Navy style is your workhorse/cottage summer short. I like the 5" inseam that is available in eight colours and in sized 0-20.
