31 Day Blog Challenge - Day Three
Day 3 - Meaning of my business name.
So I guess this question assumes Glimmer is my business. I'm not sure I would call my blog a business, it's more like a very intense hobby. Anyway...for the sake of the 31 Day Challenge, Glimmer is my business. So how did I come up with the name? I wish I had a witty and interesting story behind the name - like there was behind my previous blog Mommy X (which I'm not going to share). When I decided to start writing another blog (can't even remember why) I knew I wanted the name to be a single word a la Goop. And like my favourite blog/website Goop, I didn't really want the name to mean anything in particular, so that I could write about a variety of topics. I knew fashion and beauty would be the focus, but Vicki's Beauty Blog or Vicki on Fashion sounded a little pedestrian to me. I'm not an expert on anything I write on, I just have strong opinions that I like to share. So I began to play around with single words. Sparkle was the first word that came to mind. I've been told I have sparkly eyes, so I wanted some sort of some play on that word, but sparkle just didn't send quite right. I went to the online thesaurus and searched sparkle. The second word in the synonym's list is glimmer. I like it immediately. So it's all well and good to like a word or a name and want it to be the one, but getting the domain for that name is a whole other story. Glimmer with all endings including .com and .ca were already taken. So I had to come up with some way to incorporate the word into a .ca domain. Hence Glimmer Life became the official name of the blog.
It's funny that this question is part of this challenge, because I've been considering a re-branding of the blog. Why? Because Glimmer is the name of the blog, it's not my name. So I'm not too thrilled when people come up to me and say "oh you're Glimmer." No, I'm Vicki - my blog is Glimmer. I'm also starting to feel that Glimmer is a little bit juvenile for the audience I'm trying to reach. Anyway...if you have any thoughts, please pass them along. I'd love to hear your ideas.
