Current Read: Where The Crawdads Sing
In case you haven’t had a chance to check out my Current Reads or Current Podcasts section, I’ve decided to add my reviews to the main body of my blog so that you’ll never miss a new review. Isn’t that nice of me?
Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens (2018)i s one of those books I didn’t want to put down. Dinner? Later. Laundry. Sorry - you’ll have to wear your socks twice. Hockey. Well…that might have been the exception. :) Set in North Carolina over a seventeen year period from 1952-1969. Crawdads follows the life of Kya a young girl from a large family who is eventually left alone by her abusive father to raise herself from the young age of six. Know simply as ‘marsh girl’ by the residents of Berkley Cove (because she lives in a shack in the marsh) we are drawn into Kya’s life and lessons that the birds, insects and the sea teach her. A secondary storyline follows the murder of Chase Andrews, a former star quarterback and heartthrob from the local high school, and how Kya’s life becomes fatefully intertwined with this popular boy from the town.
While reading the book I couldn’t help but envision the chapters on the big screen staring a young Drew Barrymore. Do you remember Drew Barrymore when she was in ET? Now remove the pig tails and cubby face and you would have a perfect Kya.
Crawdads has been an Indigo Heather’s Pick and was selected by Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club AND has been a New York Time’s Bestseller. In fact I think it’s still hanging in on the Globe and Mail’s list at number 10 last week, for very good reason.
So grab your blanket, cuppa tea and curl up with Where The Crawdads Sing. Oh and do yourself a favour…order up some Uber Eats for dinner so you don’t have to break to eat.
